Purushottama Month 2026: from May 17 to June 15 — what to do and avoid in Adhika Masa
In the Vedic calendar, there is a special additional month that appears only once every three years. For people immersed in worldly affairs, this period may seem inconvenient because it disrupts the usual flow of time. However, sages and devotees welcome it with joy. This month is called Mala Masa, Adhika Masa, or by its most exalted name — Purushottama month.
It is an "intercalary" month that is added to the lunar calendar to synchronize it with the solar cycle. From the point of view of material gain and ordinary rituals aimed at earthly results, this time is considered "impure." But for spiritual practice, Purushottama month is considered one of the most powerful periods of the year.
Mala Masa: why is this time called "dirty"?
The word "mala" means "dirt" or "impurities." From the point of view of classical Vedic rituals aimed at achieving earthly prosperity (karma-kanda), this month is not intended for gaining material fruits.
- No material fruits: rituals performed for the sake of receiving material benefits, money, or status during this month are traditionally not considered auspicious for such purposes.
- Caution in worldly beginnings: during this period, it is not recommended to hold weddings, begin building a house, or open a business. It is believed that for those who marry at this time, the period will not especially support good fortune, and the family foundation may prove less stable.
From the point of view of the external world, this is a time of stagnation. But this is exactly where a great secret is hidden.
The paradox of Purushottama: a 180-degree turn
The path of bhakti transforms familiar material ideas. The month that, in ordinary Vedic calculations, was considered extra and useless for worldly affairs becomes, for devotees, a precious time full of the purest nectar. Lord Krishna showed special mercy to it — He took this period under His protection and named it after Himself, Purushottama.
For Vaishnavas, Mala Masa becomes a month when accumulated dirt is burned away. Offenses, sins, and karmic knots accumulated over years can be destroyed by serious vows during this period. Any austerity or spiritual practice in Purushottama month brings fruits tens and hundreds of times greater than at ordinary times.
How to spend this month: practical vows
If you want to make use of the benefit that Adhika Masa gives, it is important to focus on spiritual efforts while setting material ambitions aside. Here are time-tested recommendations and vows:
1. Spiritual practice
- Holy Names: try to chant more rounds of the maha-mantra than usual. This is a time for deep immersion in sound.
- Sacred texts: read the Srimad-Bhagavatam daily. Daily reading of chapter 15 of the Bhagavad-gita ("The Yoga of the Supreme Person") has special importance.
- Jagannatha-ashtaka: singing or reciting this prayer is especially auspicious during this month.
2. Austerity and purification
- Food restrictions: you can switch to eating once a day or exclude grains and legumes.
- Important: the main thing is not to take on an impossible vow. Austerity should help you remember God, not exhaust the body to the point of depletion.
- Meditation on the Dhama: if you cannot travel to a holy place — Vrindavan, Mayapur, or Jagannatha Puri — meditate on them in your heart.
3. Service and donations
- The magic of the number 33: during this month, donations and offerings are traditionally made in multiples of 33. For example, you can offer 33 obeisances to Vaishnavas or make a donation connected with this number. This is an esoteric key to the energy of this month.
Summary: time for what matters most
Purushottama month reminds us: there is a time for work and daily life, and there is a time for the soul. Do not try to build castles on sand during an "impure" month — better cleanse your heart of dust. Use this unique chance once every three years to burn karma and make a qualitative leap in your spiritual development.
